Postoperative Complications: KidneySummary. Acute renal failure with a mortality rate higher than 50°/o is still a serious complication in the postoperative course. All measures must therefore be taken to prevent this complication. Intensive care for a good circulation with exact volumen subtitution is the first step. A forced diuresis should be maintained by mannitol or furosemid in all cases in whom the possibility of acute renal failure can be anticipated. The differential diagnosis must include prae-and postrenal disturbances as well as "kidney in shock" and the shock kidney. If renal failure occurs the principles for compensation of the lost renal function must be observed and the possibility of a peritoneal-or hemodialysis must be discussed with the dialysis centres in time.
