Ajzen and Fishbein's theory of reasoned action as applied to moral behavior: A confirmatory analysis.

Abstract: A confirmatory test of Ajzen and Fishbein's (1980) theory of reasoned action as applied to the realm of moral behavior using structural equation modeling was conducted. Ss were 1,056 male and female athletes ranging in age from 10 to 18 years (M = 14.5). Ss completed a questionnaire that contained 2 hypothetical situations related to moral behavior in sports. For each situation, Ss completed scales assessing all components of the model. A modified version of the theory provided a significant improvement over t… Show more

“…The studies were conducted by: Warshaw (1980), Ryan (1982), Shimp and Kavas (1984), Vallerand et al (1992), Greene et al (1997), Chang (1998), and Kim et al (2009). The impact of the existence of a positive relationship between attitude and subjective norms is quite clear, namely: individuals who have a positive subjective norms toward the desired behavior, then they will tend to have a positive attitude toward the behavior (Chang, 1998;Aarts et al, 1998).…”

“…The theory suggests that behaviour is determined by the behavioural intention to emit the behaviour (Vallerand et al, 1992). The theory further states that there are two main factors that determine behavioural intentions namely: personal (attitudinal) and social (normative) (Vallerand et al, 1992). The first factor, (i.e.…”

“…The first factor, (i.e. personal or attitude) towards a particular behaviour is considered to be a function of the salient behavioural beliefs about the perceived consequences of performing the behaviour and the person's evaluation of consequences of his/her performance of the behaviour (Vallerand et al, 1992). The second factor, subjective norms, consists of an actor's perceptions of what important specific referent individuals or groups think s/he should do.…”

“…For example, residents living near the Great Barrier Reef differ in their attitudes about climate change (Tobin et al, 2014); some recognize the importance of taking action or feel morally obligated to act, while others are less concerned (van Riper et al, 2012). Documenting and analysing these individual attitudes is important for developing appropriate solutions to threats to the Great Barrier Reef such as climate change (Ehrlich and Kennedy, 2005), particularly as attitudes help people perceive and evaluate the consequences of undertaking a behavior (Vallerand et al, 1992).…”
