Airway management during left-sided gastrobronchial fistula repair after esophagectomy for esophageal carcinoma

Abstract: Rationale: Gastrobronchial fistula (GBF) is a rare but life-threatening complication of esophagectomy with gastric conduit reconstruction, and airway management during fistula repair is challenging. Here, we describe airway management in a patient undergoing left-sided GBF repair using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. Patient concerns: A 63-year-old man diagnosed with esophageal carcinoma underwent esophagectomy with reconstruction by gastric pull-up and tabulariza… Show more

“…Surgical repair usually involves use of pericardial flaps, muscle flaps, and biologic mesh, which are used to repair airway defects. 13,16,17 Although Li et al have shown that surgical repair has a greater long-term survival rate than other noninvasive treatments, 18 patients with TGAF cannot tolerate general anesthesia and the trauma associated with surgery. 19,20 With the development of minimally invasive intervention, airway stenting has become the most important treatment for TGAF.…”
