The aim of this study was to apply an aerobic biotechnological process for the purification of seawater polluted with hydrocarbons. With this purpose, water samples from different sinkholes from Quintana Roo, Mexico, were collected during the seasons of high (July) and low tourist activity (October), and their levels of pollution were evaluated. The results show that anthracene and icosane concentrations were related to tourism activity. Another achievement of this work was the isolation of a mixed culture, including Enterobacter, Serratia, Escherichia, Proteus, and Klebsiella, from the most polluted sinkhole found, capable of using diesel as a sole carbon source. Finally, using the mixed culture, kinetic studies of diesel degradation in seawater were carried out by sequential batch in an airlift bioreactor, obtaining a high percentage, >75%, of diesel uptake after 100 h.

Pollution of freshwater ecosystems from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is a global concern. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has included the PAHs pyrene, phenanthrene, and naphthalene among the 16 priority compounds of special concern for their toxicological effects. The aim of this study was to adapt and characterize a microbial consortium from ore waste with the potential to remove these three PAHs from water. This microbial consortium was exposed to the target PAHs at levels of 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 mg L−1 for 14 days. PAH bioremoval was measured using the analytical technique of solid phase microextraction, followed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (SPME-GC/MS). The results revealed that up to 90% of the target PAHs can be removed from water after 14 days at a concentration level of 100 mg L−1. The predominant group of microorganisms identified at the phylum taxonomic level were the Proteobacteria, while the Actinobacteria were the predominant subgroup. The removal of phenanthrene, naphthalene, and pyrene predominantly occurred in specimens of genera Stenotrophomonas, Williamsia, and Chitinophagaceae, respectively. This study demonstrates that the use of specific microorganisms is an alternative method of reducing PAH levels in water.

El consorcio fue obtenido de un cenote contaminado con fenantreno y naftaleno ubicado en la ciudad de Cancún, Quintana Roo, México. En este trabajo se mostró que el consorcio microbiano está también compuesto por hongos con al menos una especie de Cladosporium, además de las bacterias previamente identificadas en trabajos anteriores del grupo de investigación (Pseudomonas, Diplococcus y Enterobacter), por lo que se conforma así un consorcio mixto. Se modeló la cinética de crecimiento de biomasa fúngica utilizando tres modelos: Gompertz, de Von Bertalanffy y logístico para los datos obtenidos por espectrofotometría. Para todos los casos, Von Bertalanffy fue el modelo que se ajustó de manera sobresaliente a los valores experimentales (σ ≤ 0.4). El análisis por estereomicroscopía contribuyó a dar una explicación cualitativa de los mecanismos de asimilación de hidrocarburo en biomasa fúngica, al hacer evidente el contacto directo entre esta biomasa fúngica y el hidrocarburo. Finalmente, cultivos en cajas petri recubiertas con petróleo crudo maya corroboraron que la biomasa fúngica obtenida, produce alguna clase de hidrofobinas que permiten romper la tensión superficial entre la interfase hidrofílica/hidrofóbica, favoreciendo así el contacto con el sustrato y los microorganismos.Key words: fungus, bioremediation, petroleum, direct contact uptake ABSTRACTMicrobial consortium has been cultured in airlift bioreactors for ex situ studies.
