Air traffic maximization for the terminal phase of flight under FAA's NextGen framework

Abstract: The NextGen program is the FAA's response to the ever increasing air traffic, that provides tools to increase the capacity of national airspace, while ensuring the safety of aircraft. In support of this vision, this paper provides a decentralized algorithm based on dual decomposition for safe merging and spacing of aircraft at the terminal phase of the flight. Aircraft negotiate optimal merging times that ensure safety, while penalizing deviations from the nominal path. We provide feasibility conditions for th… Show more

“…This paper extends previous work on distributed merging and spacing for the terminal phase of flight (i.e., [13] and [14]) to allow for mixed fleets of aircraft, where having heterogeneous aircraft implies that the spacing distances depend on the types of aircraft present. For example, the Boeing 747 is a large aircraft that requires a greater inter-aircraft separation distance than a small plane like the Canadair CRJ700.…”

“…Dual Decomposition is an emerging tool for optimizing costs in multi-agent systems (eg [12], [13]). It allows each agent to maintain its own version of the variables that it needs for optimization and ensures the equality with its neighbors' versions through the introduction of Lagrange multipliers.…”

“…An important construct in enabling new air traffic operations is ensuring that the system provides the agents with the flexibility necessary to robustly respond to disruptions and disturbances, while increasing overall system capacity [3]. As clearly defined in [4], the IM concept involves an air traffic controller issuing an IM clearance to a candidate aircraft.…”
