Air quality monitoring and simulation on urban scale over Munich

Abstract: Chemical-transport models are a persuasive tool to predict and study air pollution on different temporal and spatial scales. However, due to the complexity of physics and chemistry of air pollutants' interactions and lack of precise input data, these models have uncertainties. In particular, most of the emission data have a too coarse resolution and are not appropriate for application in urban scale air quality modeling. In this study, a downscaling approach is utilized for emission data in order to improve th… Show more

“…POLYPHE-MUS/DLR is an air quality modelling platform operated at DLR based on the POLYPHEMUS chemistry transport model (Mallet et al, 2007) coupled to the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model (Skamarock et al, 2008) with the TNO-MACC emission inventory (Denier van der Gon et al, 2010). It has been further developed within the PA-SODOBLE project for sensitivity studies of the mountainous Black Forest region (Bergemann et al, 2012) and to cover urban areas in southern Bavaria (Khorsandi et al, 2018). It uses the TNO-MACC emission inventory (Kuenen et al, 2014).…”

“…The CAMS European Forecasting Ensemble is an ensemble of seven chemical transport models described in more detail by Marécal et al (2015). For air quality forecasting at a higher spatial resolution for Germany and regions therein, the air quality modelling system Polyphemus/DLR operationally provides predictions of up to 72 hours at spatial resolutions of 2 km down to 500 m (Khorsandi et al, 2018;Mallet et al, 2007).…”

“…Among others, core air pollutant species (O3, NO2, SO2, CO, PM10 and PM2.5) are daily forecast by seven European models (CHIMERE, EMEP, EURAD-IM, LOTOS-EUROS, MATCH, MOCAGE, SILAM). In 2019 DEHM and GEM-AQ models were also added [11]. These regional CTMs run locally on common input for meteorology, boundary conditions and emissions.…”
