“…Given the discussion above, OC/BC mass fractions during aircraft SN tests are likely to be of the order of ∼1 and enhancements in BC light absorption in optical filter-based methods for similar OC/BC ratios have been reported to be ∼20% (Cappa et al 2008). When compared with the order of magnitude discrepancies between estimates of EI(BC) derived from SN and measurements observed by Stettler et al (2011), any effect of OC on the SN is likely to be secondary. Thus, in the experiments described below, semivolatile OC is removed using a catalytic stripper.…”

“…Since engine lifetimes are ∼20 years, methods to estimate EI(BC) will be required for several decades for the purposes of environmental impact studies. A preliminary analysis by Stettler et al (2011) showed that estimates of EI(BC) derived using the SN and FOA3 significantly underestimate EI(BC) when compared with engine emission measurements, with 40% of data points being underestimated by an order of magnitude or more. In a companion paper, we evaluate different methods to estimate aircraft BC and associated uncertainties (Stettler et al 2013).…”

“…5 Personal exposure to traffi c-related air pollution is a function of both ambient concentrations (a function of vehicle technology and other factors) and time activity patterns. [59][60][61][62][63] The IEA maintains a technical-economic database that includes detailed information on transport activity, vehicle activity, energy demand, and well-to-wheel greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions. 64 The IEA's Global Electric Vehicle Outlook report tracks sales of electric vehicles, and the International Council on Clean Transportation maintains a set of data tables, comparison charts, and a conversion tool for comparing passenger vehicle fuel standards.…”

“…Recent studies indicate that aircraft emissions contribute significantly to particle mass and particle number (PN) concentration in the vicinity of airports (Arunachalam et al, 2011;Dodson et al, 2009;Hsu et al, 2012;Hu et al, 2009;Levy et al, 2012;Stettler et al, 2011;Unal et al, 2005;Yu et al, 2004). POA dominates the total aerosol at low engine loads, corresponding to idle and taxiing operation Presto et al, 2011;Timko et al, 2010).…”
