Air Pressure: Temporal Hierarchies in Nepali Aviation

Abstract: While the aviation industry is dominated by narratives of smooth, unending growth and future planning, in practice it is profoundly striated and asymmetrical. Through an ethnographic study of how air traffic controllers, pilots, and operations staff in Nepal experience “air pressure,” this article demonstrates how understandings of the uneven geography of aviation infrastructure are framed in terms of time. Nepali airports are often perceived as “lagging behind” or “quaint” in comparison to other airpor… Show more

“…Rodrigo didn't see zueira as a pedagogically valuable form of busyness: instead, he valued sanctioned rhythms of work, study, consumption, and rest centered on constant busyness. In his imaginary, these rhythms aligned with the needs of the Brazilian private sector, and with the global temporalities of capital (Chu 2019; T. Harris 2021). In practice, though, his effort to churn out temporally disciplined students smuggled specific middle‐class mores into a seemingly objective performance of the rhythms of global capital (Heiman, Freeman, and Liechty 2012; Bear 2016).…”

“…The aircraft in their critical period which are taking off and landing at the airport requires weather information as an important part of its operations. Atmospheric pressure changes, temperature changes, local weather made a lot of delays and cancelation especially in the mountaious area [10]. Meanwhile during in flight phase, significant weather such as: thunderstorm, turbulence and volcanic ash effect the efficiency and safety of flight operation [25,26].…”
