A porous TiO2 layer was prepared with the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) of Ti. In a further step, Pd was deposited on the TiO2 surface layer using the adsorption method. The activity of the Pd/TiO2/Ti catalyst was investigated during the oxidation of CO to CO2 in a mixture of air with 5% CO. The structure of the catalytic active layer was studied using a scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The PEO process provided a porous TiO2 layer with a uniform thickness in the range of 5–10 µm, which is desirable for the production of Pd-supported catalysts. A TOF-SIMS analysis showed the formation of Pd nanoparticles after the adsorption treatment. The conversion of CO to CO2 in all samples was achieved at 150–280 °C, depending on the concentration of Pd. The composition of Pd/ TiO2/Ti was determined using ICP-MS. The optimum concentration of Pd on the surface of the catalyst was approximately 0.14% wt. This concentration was obtained when a 0.4% PdCl2 solution was used in the adsorption process. Increasing the concentration of PdCl2 did not lead to a further improvement in the activity of Pd/ TiO2/Ti.

Fugitive dust particles are important contributors to urban ambient particulate matter (PM), while their emissions have been ignored or greatly underestimated in previous studies, leading to the underestimation of PM concentrations and health impacts. Thus, studying the morphology of fugitive dust, taking appropriate dust-suppression measures, and evaluating dust-suppression effects are crucial to the prevention and control of fugitive dust. In this study, we investigated the morphology and composition of dust particles from different dust sources, including bare land, stock dump, construction, and road dust. Afterwards, different dust-suppression measures including fence interception nets, bare ground mesh nets, and road dust-suppressants were undertaken to simulate and analyze their dust-suppression effects. Finally, the height concentration profiling method was used to comprehensively evaluate the on-site dust-suppression effect, which can not only accurately evaluate the dust-suppression effect, but also predict the dust-suppression ability in a wide range. Gaining insights into the morphology and composition of dust from representative sources is an important step forward to prevent and control fugitive dust, and selecting an appropriate dust-suppression effect evaluation method will provide a beneficial guide for effectively controlling PM pollution in the future.

A high-efficiency, long-life cabin filter unit is required for the effective purification of the air inside a vehicle. However, conventional cabin air filters that utilize electrostatic effects are less efficient and less effective owing to environmental factors. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes exhibit a high porosity and surface-to-surface dust-removal performance, and maintain a stable pressure drop, indicating their good potential as filter materials. Therefore, in this study, the use of PTFE membranes for the fabrication of automobile filters and the filtration performance of the filters were examined. To this end, first, the properties of PTFE membranes mainly used in HEPA air conditioning filters and those of membranes used as vehicle cabin filters were compared. Next, the thickness, weight, stiffness, pore size, and filtration performance characteristics of filter media fabricated by blending melt-blown (MB) nonwoven, PTFE membranes, and supporting nonwoven into a total filtration layer were compared and analyzed. Lastly, the environmental change durability performance of the automobile cabin filter based on PTFE membrane and the results of the test after the installation of the filter in a vehicle were demonstrated.
