Air Pollution Monitoring Strategies and Technologies for Urban Areas

Abstract: Current ambient air quality monitoring is solely based on fixed monitoring sites, not always reflecting the exposure and effects on humans. This article reviews the current situation in Europe, the USA and Asia and discusses the main differences and similarities. Based on the analysis of the relation between monitoring techniques and strategies as well as the analysis of current trends and developments in monitoring strategies, new concepts and directions of future urban monitoring networks and strategies are … Show more

“…These regulations can take the form of a ban on certain agents (Kuhlbusch et al, 2013), such as lead in gasoline; (Von Storch et al, 2003) or a technical requirement, such as three-way catalytic converters in cars (Farrauto & Heck, 1999;Merget & Rosner, 2001). There are also standards set by governmental agencies for levels of pollutants (Bell, Morgenstern, & Harrington, 2011).…”

“…Since the process of air pollution monitoring for capturing spatial variability is costly and time-consuming [24], it is highly desirable to find the air quality MND which can use an optimal number of measurement devices and reduce costs [25]. In general, the objective of air pollution monitoring network concerns spatial representativeness (i.e., siting criteria, including fixed or mobile sites and numbers of sites), temporal resolution, and accuracy of measurement [26].…”

“…Cela peut notamment faire référence à une règlementation visant à interdire certains polluants dans l'ensemble de la ville (Jones, Harrison et al, 2012 ;Kuhlbusch, Quass et al, 2013) ou la mise en place d'une limitation du niveau d'émission pour tous les véhicules. Supposons, par exemple, une réduction de 5 µg/m 3 de PM 2,5 sur tous les territoires.…”
