In response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, nations implemented lockdown measures to contain the virus. This study assessed air pollution levels during and after lockdowns, focusing on heavily affected locations: Oulu and Helsinki in Finland, Paris in France, Madrid in Spain, Milan in Italy, and Wuhan in China. Air Quality Index (AQI) data from these areas over two years were analyzed to understand lockdown effects. COVID-19 lockdowns in six cities were compared with SARS-CoV-2 measures using statistical methods. Pollutant Outdoor variations were evaluated via tests, showing significant differences. Parametric analyses and regression studied lockdown impacts on pollution and relationships. The study comprehensively analyzed COVID-19 lockdowns' effects on air quality, identifying differences, quantifying changes, and exploring patterns in Oulu and Helsinki. Pollutant correlations varied among cities during lockdowns. Regression analysis highlighted independent variables' impact on pollutants. Decreases in NO2 were seen in Helsinki, Madrid, Oulu, Paris, and Milan, reflecting reduced traffic and industry. PM2.5 and PM10 reductions occurred in these cities and also Wuhan, except for O3 levels which increased. Reduced human activities improved air quality, especially for NO2 and PM10. Regional variations necessitate tailored interventions. We observed that during the COVID-19 lockdowns, there was a substantial decrease in both PM2.5 and NO2 levels, indicating a direct correlation between reduced human activities, such as transportation and industrial operations, and improved air quality. This underscores the potential impact of environmental measures and suggests the need for sustainable practices to mitigate urban pollution.

Real-time detection of hazardous gases in the ambient and indoors has become the prime motive for curbing the problem of air pollution. Keeping the concentration of hazardous gases in control is the main task before human society so as to keep environmental balance. Smart sensors are attracting researchers to focus on fabricating devices that could detect and predict the presence of gas in real-time, give accurate results about the gas concentration, detection of a target gas from the mixture of gases. This smart gas sensor system can have applications in the field of military, space, underwater, indoor, outdoors, factories, vehicles, and wearable smart devices. This study reviews recent advances in smart sensor technology with respect to the material structure, sensing technique, and discrimination algorithm. Focus is given on reducing the power consumption and area of a sensor circuitry with the help of different techniques.

Because of global lock-downs caused by the unexpected COVID-19, the interactions between emission trading and related markets have changed significantly compared to the pre-COVID-19 period. Considering the pandemic effect, this paper established an integrated system to identify the relationship trajectories between carbon trading market and impact factors. A noise-assisted multivariate empirical mode decomposition (N-A MEMD) method was utilized to simultaneously decompose the original multi-dimensional time series into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), after which the Lempel-Ziv (LZ) complexity algorithm was applied to reconstruct the IMFs into high-frequency (HF), low-frequency (LF), and trend modules. Vector autoregression (VAR) and vector error correction (VEC) models were then used to systematically simulate the correlations. The time span was split into pre-COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 periods for comparison, and the mobility trends data during the outbreak period released by the Apple company was chosen to reflect the pandemic effects. The empirical analysis results revealed the energy prices, macroeconomic index, and exchange rate are the main external impact factors of carbon price in the short term. Summarizing from the cointegration models over the long term, the market stability reserve (MSR) mechanism was found to have ability on stabilizing the carbon price under the epidemic shock. Furthermore, the COVID-19 was found to complicate the relationships between carbon price and influence factors, which resulted in fluctuating markets.
