The effects of air pollution on plants downwind of a fertilizer factory at Udaipur, India, were studied using three woody perennials. Seedlings of these species including a shrub (Carissa carandas L.), a leguminous avenue tree (Cassia fistula L.) and a fruit tree (Psidium guajava L.) were grown in earthen pots at different study sites receiving varying levels of air pollution input. Changes in plant growth, morphological characteristics, photosynthetic pigment, ascorbic acid, N and S contents and in dry matter allocation were considered in relation to the status of ambient air quality. Observations with these parameters have indicated that the ambient air around the factory contained pollutants at phytotoxic levels. Plant height, basal diameter, conopy area, leaf area and chlorophyll, ascorbic acid and foliar-N concentrations decreased with increasing pollution load. However, foliar-S increased slightly at polluted sites. Air pollution load around the factory have also altered the biomass allocation. Root:shoot ratios increased in C. fistula and P. guajava at polluted sites. In contrast, for C. carandas the above ground parts, where foliage assumed predominance showed precedence over the root growth. This species responded characteristically to air pollution stress by allocating more of its photosynthate towards leaf production and shoot growth.

Atmospheric aerosols and their impacts on the environment particularly on human health is an issue of significant public and governmental concern. Though studies on air quality related to total suspended particulate matter have done by various authors in India, yet respirable suspended particulate matter (PM(10)) is not characterized so far particularly in a historical and world heritage city like Agra. This study presents seasonal variation in mass levels of PM(10) and its ionic composition. PM(10) samples were collected in the proximity of Taj Mahal and subjected to chemical analysis using ion chromatography technique. The preliminary findings reveal that the 24-h average of PM(10) mass level varies from 115 to 233, 155 to 321, and 33 to 178 microg/m(3), respectively, in summer, winter, and rainy seasons indicating critical pollution situation. These values are very much higher than the National Ambient Air Quality Standards of 75 microg/m(3) (prescribed by Central Pollution Control Board, India) in both of summer and winter seasons whereas quite near the permissible limits in rainy season. The equivalent ratios of NH(4)(+) to nonsea salt SO(4)(2-) and NO(3)(-) and summation operatorCations to summation operatorAnios were found to be greater than unity indicating high source strength of ammonia and alkaline nature of aerosols. The study suggests the need for continuous and long-term systematical sampling and detailed physiochemical analysis of PM(10) and also to know the characteristics of PM in background areas for better understanding of the emission sources.

Air pollution is a fast developing environmental issue of public worries in every place. It will affect the human health and local or regional weather condition. During the last decades, the special attention for the fine particles up to 2.5µm (PM2.5) is being given. Particulate matter (2.5µm) is defined as very fine particulate pollutants which affect the human health system. In the present study, atmospheric particulate matter PM2.5 data were collected for the period between July 2016 and March 2017 at Alandur, a fast-growing place in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The pollution data was collected by a high volume sampler. The PM2.5 data from the sampler was correlated with meteorological factors like temperature, wind speed and humidity to find the interrelationship between the parameters. These results will give knowledge about which meteorological factors are modifying the PM2.5 concentrations in Alandur.
