AIMSurv: First pan-European harmonized surveillance of Aedes invasive mosquito species of relevance for human vector-borne diseases

Abstract: Human and animal vector-borne diseases, particularly mosquito-borne diseases, are emerging or re-emerging worldwide. Six Aedes invasive mosquito (AIM) species were introduced to Europe since the 1970s: Aedes aegypti, Ae. albopictus, Ae. japonicus, Ae. koreicus, Ae. atropalpus and Ae. triseriatus. Here, we report the results of AIMSurv2020, the first pan-European surveillance DECLARATIONS LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS

“…), depending on their needs, budget, and personnel. As a result, between (but also within) European countries the monitoring schemes are highly heterogeneous (Jourdain et al, 2019;Miranda et al, 2022), restricting the temporal and spatial extent of each monitoring effort and producing gaps in data collection in certain geographical areas or during specific periods. Whilst this is undoubtedly problematic, some studies suggest that different ovitraps can yield comparable results in terms of collected eggs (i.e., Velo et al, 2016).…”

The procedure of temporal downscaling and spatial aggregation did not alter the observed seasonal pattern of Ae.…”

“…spp mosquitoes, and in particular Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus , are major vectors of arboviruses, among which the yellow fever, dengue, chikungunya and zika viruses ( 30 , 31 ). Due to their invasion potential and their health importance, they are the subject of entomological surveillance programs at nationals and European level ( 32 , 33 ).…”

“…Despite the preprocessing operation on the observations collected by the ovitraps, some of these sources of variability have likely influenced our results and therefore should be taken into account while interpreting the results. Therefore, we want to highlight the importance of carrying out reproducible and comparable sampling schemes following the most updated standards for ovitraps monitoring, as those presented as the outcome of the AIM-COST cost action by Miranda et al (2022).…”
