Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation with Ologen®Collagen Matrix for the surgical treatment of feline glaucoma

Abstract: An Ahmed valve implantation with an Ologen Collagen Matrix (Ologen CM, Aeon Astron, Leiden, the Netherlands) was performed for the treatment of uncontrolled glaucoma in a cat. This cat was a 5-year-old castrated Russian Blue male with a 12-week history of conjunctival hyperemia and mydriasis of the left eye. During the ophthalmic examination, the intraocular pressure (IOP) oculus sinister (OS) was 52 mmHg, and a narrow iridocorneal angle (ICA) was detected by gonioscopy. Medical treatment with Cosopt (2% dorzo… Show more

“…Jeong et al 21 reported that when the criterion for HP incidence was set to 3 months, the success rate was significantly lower 2 years after AGV implantation in the group in which HP occurred than in the group in which HP did not occur. Several recently human studies that assessed success rates after AGV implantation also defined HP as an IOP >21 mmHg within the first 3 months after surgery 8,11,22 . We believe that when HP is used to predict tissue reactions, it is meaningful to set a 3‐month criterion and that it is appropriate to consider that an IOP rise after 3 months is a surgical failure, not HP.…”

“…A previous study reported that AGV implants with ologen (Ologen ® Collagen Matrix, Aeon Astron) were applied to a cat with glaucoma 8 . Adequate IOP and vision were preserved in this cat for 5 years, without any systemic and topical medications 8 .…”

“…Different filtration procedures to increase aqueous humor drainage have been described for the surgical treatment of glaucoma. Transscleral iridencleisis applied together with cyclodialysis and posterior sclerotomy, trabeculectomy, glaucoma shunts and gonioimplants are used for this purpose [2,3,9,11,12] . For many years, trabeculectomy has been used and accepted as the gold standard among filtration procedures in human medicine.…”

“…Aqueous humor shunts represent an important technique in the surgical treatment of glaucoma [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] and correct glaucoma's underlying pathology of decreased outflow. The limitation of aqueous humor shunts lies in the formation of scar tissue around the implant footplate, which results in decreased flow through the shunt, and a return of elevated intraocular pressure.…”
