The aim of the paper is to assess disparities in social development of rural areas in Poland in the context of sustainable development. Social development is a multidimensional process; therefore, it requires a two-stage research procedure. The first stage consists in the analysis of the regional differentiation of the indicators for social development of rural areas in Poland in the context of implementing the concept of sustainable development, which is further divided into five social components. The second stage is a multidimensional assessment of disparities in social development of rural areas in Poland, carried out using a taxonomic measure of development. This measure enabled both classifying voivodeships in terms of the achieved level of social development of rural areas and identifying voivodeships with similar characteristics. The time scope of the analysis covered 2008 and 2018 , while the territorial scope covered 16 Polish voivodeships.The study has found a large regional differentiation in terms of social development of rural areas, which confirms the thesis on regional polarization discussed in the literature. It turns out that none of the regions can be regarded as a model example of social development. The results indicate the need for taking measures to reduce development disparities at the social level in rural areas between better and less developed voivodeships. This is necessary to counteract the exclusion of underdeveloped regions.

Agritourism is an important kind of economic activity in rural areas in Poland. The degree of development of agritourist services market in Poland makes it worthwhile to pay special attention to the role and importance of agritourism in shaping a low carbon economy in rural areas. In this work, which is a theoretical and pragmatic study, potential areas of resource-efficient and low-carbon activities in the field of tourism were outlined. According to the author, agritourist farms may be a significant element in the prosumer energy model in rural areas and serve as a model of conduct for the rural population. The owners of agritourism farms, who are often informal leaders of rural communities, are able to take environmental challenges and adapt to new circumstances. This can create an incentive and cause imitation effect among other residents of rural areas.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie historii rozwoju różnych form turystyki na Podhalu na przykładzie miejscowości Białka Tatrzańska, począwszy od agroturystyki, którą rozumie się jako rodzaj turystyki na terenach wiejskich, związanej z działalnością gospodarstwa rolnego, a uprawa roślin i chów zwierząt w takim gospodarstwie należy do jednych z głównych atrakcji (Leszka 2013), aż po turystykę SPA & Wellness, w której głównym celem turysty jest „troska o urodę i tężyznę fizyczną” (Leszka 2013). Starano się określić kolejność pojawiania się określonych form turystyki w tej miejscowości, a jednocześnie wskazać na uwarunkowania ich rozwoju. W ten sposób wyznaczono kolejne etapy rozwoju usług turystycznych w Białce Tatrzańskiej
