Presently, the recovery and reuse of phosphorus are still far from being a mainstream practice. Yet, the techniques already accepted and applied differ by the origin of the used matter (wastewater, sludge, ash) and are mainly focused on the process of precipitation. One of these techniques is struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate; MAP; MgNH4PO4·6H2O) precipitation, which can be implemented in wastewater treatment plants that use enhanced biological or semi-biological/chemical phosphorus (P) removal. Struvite/MAP is formed by a basic precipitation reaction in different stages of the wastewater treatment process, where magnesium (Mg2+), ammonium (NH4+), and orthophosphate (PO4−3). This chapter aims to discuss: (i) the progress in extraction of P from sewage sludge and animal manure; (ii) the methods to create optimal conditions for struvite precipitation in such media; (iii) the avenues for overcoming the problems associated with choosing the right Mg source, pH adjustment and the non-acceptable level of organic matter in the initial suspension; and (iv) the implication of struvite as an alternative fertilizer for the global agriculture sector.

This study aims to determine of knowing the effect of the intensity of sun radiation and the right nitrogen fertilizer on the growth of the highest chinese cabbage. The research has been carried out in Wirogunan Village, Kec. Purworejo Pasuruan City was conducted from September to December 2021. This study used a Divided Plot Design (RPT) which was repeated three times. The intensity of sun radiation is placed as the main plot (P) which consists of three levels: : 55% sun radiation intensity, : 65% sun radiation intensity, : 75% sun radiation intensity. Nitrogen fertilizer doses were placed as subplots (J) which consisted of three levels: : Nitrogen fertilizer dose 200 kg ha-1, : Nitrogen fertilizer dose 300 kg ha-1, : Nitrogen fertilizer dose of 400 kg ha-1. From the two treatments, 9 treatment combinations were obtained and each treatment was repeated three times to obtain 27 treatment combination units. The results showed that the treatment of 65% sun radiation intensity and nitrogen fertilizer 300 kg ha-1 resulted in the highest plant growth and yield. Chinese cabbage treatment with 65% sun radiation intensity and nitrogen fertilizer 300 kg ha-1 resulted in fresh weight ha-1 of 53,61 tons.

An approach to remove ammonia from mining wastewater is to precipitate ammonia into struvite, and flocculation was proved to enhance settling of struvite flocs. But the current literature fails to consider flocculent properties of struvite flocs, and previous studies focused only on small volumes. This study evaluates the effect of ammonia concentration and height on removal efficiency of struvite flocs in a batch system and compares removal efficiency of struvite flocs between a batch and a pilot‐scale continuous settling process to evaluate the potential of using flocculation to recover struvite crystals as a stand‐alone method. Removal efficiency of struvite using flocculation is evaluated depending on depth in a batch system for two different ammonia concentrations (45 and 90 ppm) and in a continuous system for different flowrates. It is shown that a higher concentration promotes flocculation and enhances settling velocities of struvite flocs. The difference between the batch and the continuous processes for the same removal efficiency was significantly higher from what has been reported in the literature: in the continuous process, 89% of struvite flocs have been recovered with a surface overflow rate (SOR) of 1.8 m.h−1, whereas, for the same height, the same efficiency corresponds to SOR = 9 m.h−1 in the batch process. The fragile nature of struvite flocs is potentially responsible for such a difference. Practitioner Points Settling velocities of struvite flocs are highly dependant on concentration and depth. Removal efficiency are considerably higher with a batch settling process for the same surface overflow rate. Flocculation enable 89% of struvite fines to be recovered in a continuous settling process with a SOR of 1.8 m.hs−1.
