Agrobiodiversity and its Conservation in Nepal

Abstract: Nepal is a part of the world's biodiversity hotspot and ranks the 49 th in the world for biodiversity. Agrobiodiversity and its conservation status were studied through literature review, field survey, key informant survey and focus group discussion. Results of field implementation of some good practices and action research were also documented. Among 24,300 total species in the country, 28% are agricultural genetic resources (AGRs), termed as agrobiodiversity. Agrobiodiversity has six components (crops, forag… Show more

“…Nepal is the -micro-museum‖ of world climate, ranging from subtropical to arctic within a short 150 to 250 km north-south distance; and there is a great variety of micro-climate -both resulted diverse land use and agroecological diversity. Nepal has three ecological regions: the terai, the hills and the mountains and 12 agroecosystems (Joshi et al, 2020). Despite such climatic diversity, agriculture largely based on traditional practices, and in such case adoption of agroforestry may provide high returns.…”

Further, flowering plant diversity in the country is huge, accounting for two percentage of the global record (Kindlmann, 2011).…”

“…Around 50% of agricultural genetic diversity has been lost already in Nepal (Joshi et al, 2020). This loss called genetic erosion could be attributed due to change in land use, preference of farmers towards new and improved seeds and many more other anthropogenic activities.…”

“…Buffalo is a major livestock commodity among 35 livestock species (Joshi et al 2020) in Nepal where buffalo population in-country is estimated to be 5.30 million (MLD, 2018/19). Buffalo is an important livestock commodity of Nepal, it alone contributes about 63% and 52 % of national annual milk and meat production respectively (MoALD, 2018/19).…”
