Agricultural water conservation in china: plastic mulch and traditional irrigation

Abstract: Plastic mulch is commonly used with micro-irrigation in developed countries; however, Chinese farmers use plastic mulch on a vast scale independent of micro-irrigation. For the past three decades, China's land area in plastic mulch has exceeded the world's total land area in micro-irrigation. We report results from the water-scarce region of Minqin County, where 87% of Chinese farmers interviewed responded that they use plastic mulch to conserve water and 53% to increase yields. Survey results indicated the de… Show more

“…Usowicz et al (2013); Pramanik et al (2015) found that Soil Solarisation Technology (SST) had a positively impact on soil temperature because It influenced the soil thermal regime by controlling for radiation balance and soil thermal conductivity (K), as well as volumetric heat capacity (C v ) in soil. Ingman et al (2015); Merante et al (2017); Roxy et al (2014); Gan et al (2012) demonstrated that the K and C v of soil are significantly impacted by soil moisture content. Furthermore, the results of their study identified increased K and C v with soil depth.…”

“…They found that soil porosity decreases with soil depth. Liang et al (2017) Qin et al (2015; Xiukang et al (2015); Jabran et al (2016) ; Wu et al (2017);Ingman et al (2015) all found that Soil-Mulching Systems (SMS) had a positively influence on soil heat transfer and soil evaporation. As a result, SMS was more useful for reducing soil moisture losses.…”

“…According to Bu et al (2013), polythene mulch can retain precipitation, reduce water loss and increase the water use efficiency of crop plants. Despite some works been reported on the use of polythene mulch to reduce soil erosion (Zhang et al, 2013) and water conservation (Ingman et al, 2015), the effect of the mulch on managing saline soil for potential maize production has poorly been understood. The experiment was therefore conducted to estimate the contribution of polythene mulch and irrigation water for the mitigation of salinity effect on maize cultivation in the saline area of Bangladesh.…”
