Agricultural planning of annual plants under demand, maturation, harvest, and yield risk

Abstract: In this study we present a planning methodology for a firm whose objective is to match the random supply of annual premium fruits and vegetables from a number of contracted farms and the random demand from the retailers during the planning period. The supply uncertainty is due to the uncertainty of the maturation time, harvest time, and yield. The demand uncertainty is the uncertainty of weekly demand from the retailers. We provide a planning methodology to determine the farm areas and the seeding times for ann… Show more

“…Handayati and colleagues [54] identified four different chain coordination mechanisms: (1) supply chain contract, (2) information sharing, (3) joint decision-making, and (4) collective learning, although all relevant and current papers focus on the first one. Contracting is the most diffused mechanism of coordination in the agri-food supply chain for managing tactical and operational decisions [70,71]. Contract models in the agri-food sector have been specifically discussed to investigate vertical and horizontal chain integration, as they highlight the pros and cons of investing in a cooperative setting [5,66,71,72].…”

“…As Table 2 shows coordination mechanism is dominated by the application of supply chain contracts, usually relating to tactical and operational decisions [12,23,44,46,50,54]. In contrast, the supply chain contract for a strategic level receives little attention.…”

“…Limited studies (e.g. Tan and Comden 2012;Romero 2000) consider biophysical and climatic uncertainty, which may affect yield or best time to harvest. However, chain optimisation to increase resilience to EWE is an important issue that has not been addressed in the literature.…”
