Agricultural Management through Wireless Sensors and Internet of Things

<p>This research presents a way to avoid network congestion during unicast CoAP-based group communication using increased delays between consecutive requests (DCR) in LoWPAN border routers to limit request send rates. It also provides a way to determine DCR values that are suitable for various network group sizes with differing node counts. The optimal DCR is obtained using the least squares approximation method and the relative minimum. Results from experimentation shows a positive relation, that is, an increase in group size necessitates an increase in DCR value. Experiments in various group sizes show favorable network performance and support the proposed congestion control method using DCR.</p>

An Event-based Middleware for Syntactical Interoperability in Internet of Things

Internet of Things (IoT) connecting sensors or devices that record physical observations of the environment and a variety of applications or other Internet services. Along with the increasing number and diversity of devices connected, there arises a problem called interoperability. One type of interoperability is syntactical interoperability, where the IoT should be able to connect all devices through various data protocols. Based on this problem, we proposed a middleware that capable of supporting interoperability by providing a multi-protocol gateway between COAP, MQTT, and WebSocket. This middleware is developed using event-based architecture by implementing publish-subscribe pattern. We also developed a system to test the performance of middleware in terms of success rate and delay delivery of data. The system consists of temperature and humidity sensors using COAP and MQTT as a publisher and web application using WebSocket as a subscriber. The results for data transmission, either from sensors or MQTT COAP has a success rate above 90%, the average delay delivery of data from sensors COAP and MQTT below 1 second, for packet loss rate varied between 0% - 25%. The interoperability testing has been done using Interoperability assessment methodology and found out that ours is qualified.

Text Mining for Pest and Disease Identification on Rice Farming with Interactive Text Messaging

To overcome pests and diseases of rice farming, farmers always rely on information and knowledge from agricultural experts for decision making. The problem is that experts are not always available when the farmers need and the cost is quite high. Pests and diseases elimination is hard to be done individually since the farmers are lack of knowledge about the pest types that attack the rice fields. The objective of this study is to build a knowledgebased system that can identify pests and diseases interactively based on the information that has been told by the farmers using SMS communication services. The system can provide a convenience way to the farmers in delivering pests and disease problem information using a natural language. The text mining method performs tokenizing, filtering and porter stemming that used to extract important information sent by a SMS service. The method of Jaccard Similarity Coefficient (JSC) was used to calculate similarities of each pest and disease based on symptoms that are sent by the farmers through SMS. The corpus database usedin this study consists of 28.526 root words, 1.309 stop wordsand 180 words list. Pest and disease database reference in this study was obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisher (MAF) Timor-Leste. The result of the experiment shows that the system is able to identify the symptoms based on the keywords identified with the accuracy of 81%.
