Agri-food trade and climate change

Abstract: Climate change, the agri-food sector and trade are closely related. This contribution aims at presenting issues related to the economic impacts of climate changes on international trade. The agri-food sector is one of the most hit by changes in climate, and it is also responsible of substantial environmentalimpacts. In a globalised world, these effects do not alter only the agri-food domestic markets but propagate across countries. While climate change may trigger changes in trade patterns by altering food avai… Show more

“…Based on existing literature findings, the weather was considered a cross‐cutting category among all levels (Bhanumurthy et al., 2013; Feng et al., 2014; Kahiluoto, 2020). The weather may influence the changes in production (food availability), disrupt the food volume, and alter the trade patterns in domestic and international markets (Santeramo et al., 2021). In the current literature review, weather can affect the volume of trade and investment (Koizumi, 2019; Koizumi & Furuhashi, 2020), market imperfections (Larson, 2004), and price/productivity risks channels (Mainardi, 2012a).…”

“…The extension of the agricultural lands into noncrop lands to produce energy crops contributes to increase the level of the GHG releases, with potential detrimental impacts on climate change (Santeramo et al, 2021b;Santeramo and Searle, 2019). Differently, the conversion of existing cropland to produce energy crops may aggravate the pressure on land supply and exacerbate the competition between crops intended to energy production and those intended for food and feed consumption (Tomei and Helliwell, 2016).…”

“…The literature on the relationship between climate change and production and trade dynamics is large 15 More details are provided in the Appendix A. and varied (e.g., [34]). Previous studies start from the assumption that, for open economies, the impacts of climate change on agriculture in any region is not isolated from the impacts occurring in the rest of the world (e.g., [18,35]).…”
