Agreement and Its Failures

Abstract: A novel proposal regarding predicate-argument agreement that combines detailed empirical investigation with rigorous theoretical discussion. In this book, Omer Preminger investigates how the obligatory nature of predicate-argument agreement is enforced by the grammar. Preminger argues that an empirically adequate theory of predicate-argument agreement requires recourse to an operation, whose obligatoriness is a grammatical primitive not reducible to representational properties, but whose success… Show more

“…One possible explanation for this fact is that both ϕ-probes need to find values and be spelled out before any other operations target the CP layer. 11 This proposal may appear to be in disagreement with Preminger (2014), who argues that the failure to value unvalued features does not cause the derivation to crash in all cases. On the other hand, my proposal does not necessarily conflict with Preminger's analysis, since he assumes Agree to be an "obligatory opera-Consequently, all uninterpretable features serve as probes and begin seeking goals as soon as they enter the derivation.…”

“…The point here is that pronominal clitics can be formally/Case licensed through a relation with one functional head but cliticize to a different head for morpho-phonological reasons. While certain details have been glossed over here for reasons of space (see Harizanov 2014;Kramer 2014;Preminger 2014 for recent work), I believe that this working hypothesis provides a plausible account of argument licensing and morpheme ordering in Yucatec clauses headed by a verb.…”
