Agreed Definitions and a Shared Vision for New Standards in Stroke Recovery Research: The Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Roundtable Taskforce

Abstract: The first Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Roundtable established a game changing set of new standards for stroke recovery research. Common language and definitions were required to develop an agreed framework spanning the four working groups: translation of basic science, biomarkers of stroke recovery, measurement in clinical trials and intervention development and reporting. This paper outlines the working definitions established by our group and an agreed vision for accelerating progress in stroke recover… Show more

“…In opposition to motor learning and compensation, true recovery has been conceptualized as the biological process underlying a change in UE-FM scores from baseline in a thirty days time-window (Bernhardt et al 2017). Here we show that improvements on the UE-FM scale, related to true recovery, can also occur at later stages post-stroke (e.g.…”

“…To be eligible, patients had to have a first stroke (either ischemic or hemorrhagic) less than 6 months before recruitment 30 Candidate patients were evaluated by a physiatrist, and those who satisfied the entry criteria were asked to give their written informed consent. Those who agreed were randomized to one of the treatment programs using a list of codes previously generated through a permuted-block randomization procedure.…”

“…We therefore tested ODN treatment in a photothrombotic model that produces a small cortical infarction. To further differentiate this second model and comply with stroke basic research recommendation (Bernhardt et al, 2017), we used aged female mice (20 ± 2 months). Finally, to further strengthen the translational relevance of our data, we used a hydrogel impregnated with ODN (0,1 and 5 µg) and performed a single deposition of the hydrogel into the stroke cavity (7.5 µL) 5 days after the onset of stroke ( Figure 5A).…”
