“…The NOR associated proteins are known to include RNA polymerase 1, C23 protein (nucleolin), and B23 protein; their exact structure and function remain uncertain (1 8). However, alterations in the number and configuration of AgNORs have been demonstrated in numerous types of human neoplasms (18,19,20) and also in human trophoblastic tissues (61), rat tumors (62, 63), and in the rat pituitary following hormone stimulation (50). The aim of the current work is to study the AgNORs in routine histological sections of myocardial lesions of doxorubicin-treated rats in order to characterize the nuclear changes induced by doxorubicin in myocytes.…”

“…In rat pituitary glands the number of Ag-NORs in anterior lobe corticotrophs was increased following bilateral adrenalectomy [23]. These studies indicated that the number of AgNORs changed reflecting increased ribosomal gene transcription in corticotrophs or adrenalectomized animals, because both rough endoplasmic reticulum and pro-opiomelanocortin mRNA levels were increased in these cells [15,17].…”

“…AgNOR values obtained for pituitary adenomas (Table 1; Figure le) were difficult to interpret for two reasons. Firstly, the dependency of AgNOR number on endocrine stimulation has been reported after growth hormone application in vitro (de Capao et al, 1985) and in rat corticotrophs following bilateral adrenalectomy (Peebles & McNicol, 1989). Thus, one would expect a relationship between the AgNOR number and hormone production by the adenoma.…”
