Aging Rate of Spin Glasses from Simulations Matches Experiments

Abstract: Experiments on spin glasses can now make precise measurements of the exponent z(T) governing the growth of glassy domains, while our computational capabilities allow us to make quantitative predictions for experimental scales. However, experimental and numerical values for z(T) have differed. We use new simulations on the Janus II computer to resolve this discrepancy, finding a time-dependent z(T,t_{w}), which leads to the experimental value through mild extrapolations. Furthermore, theoretical insight is gain… Show more

“…Furthermore, a mild extrapolation from z c (ξ = 12 a 0 ) to z c (ξ = 38 a 0 ) [9] is compatible with the thin-film value z c = 9.62 [7] (the film width was ∼ 38 a 0 ). For x 1, the ξ-independent z c (T = T c ) = 6.69±0.06 [9] agrees with the CuMn result at T = 0.95T c , z c = 6.80 [8].…”

“…Here, we report measurements of ξ(t w ) on a single crystal of CuMn (6 at.%), at T = 0.886 T c and for times 2 × 10 3 s ≤ t w ≤ 8 × 10 4 s. In the absence of crystallites limiting ξ to the crystallite size (∼ 80 nm, typically), we reach ξ ∼ 150 nm, a world record in a glassy phase (and, certainly, in the low-temperature regime x 1). Our measured aging rate z c = 12.37 ± 1.07 is the largest ever measured in a spin-glass, in a dramatic demonstration of the dynamic slowing-down with growth of ξ [9]. We are also able to reproduce our experimental results by means of a simple extrapolation of the Janus simulations [9].…”
