Aging: Molecular Pathways and Implications on the Cardiovascular System

Abstract: The world's population over 60 years is growing rapidly, reaching 22% of the global population in the next decades. Despite the increase in global longevity, individual healthspan needs to follow this growth. Several diseases have their prevalence increased by age, such as cardiovascular diseases, the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Understanding the aging biology mechanisms is fundamental to the pursuit of cardiovascular health. In this way, aging is characterized by a gradual decline in p… Show more

“…A significant proportion of these factors are, in fact, polymorphic variants of genes coding for key proteins of DNA repair and maintenance of genomic integrity, including TP53. (95)(96)(97)(98)(99) Panels of markers for carriership of factors associated with the capacity to detect and repair DNA damage and for self-renewal of cell populations are currently being developed and tested in order to assess their applicability to assessment of risk for various diseases and conditions. (100-102) Different p53 isoforms combination promote different p53-mediated cell responses (proliferation, repair, senescence, motility, differentiation, de-differentiation, trans-differentiation, cell death,… ) (103).…”

“…Aging is inevitable, but pathological aging poses a serious threat to human health, reduces the quality of life of the elderly, and promotes the occurrence of related diseases [1,2]. Aging is an extremely important factor that induces many kinds of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, stroke and heart failure [3,4]. Among them, vascular aging plays a central role in morbidity and mortality of people [5].…”

“…The world's population over 60 is growing quickly and will reach 22% of the global population in the next years [26]. Aging process is highly intricate; it leads to gradual deterioration in physiological functions, including the endocrine system, which may be responsible for gradual increase in morbidity and mortality.…”
