Icephobic Behaviour and Thermal Stability of Flame-Sprayed Polyethylene Coating: The Effect of Process Parameters

The present work investigates the effect of different process parameters on the production of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) coatings by flame spray technology. Previously, flame spraying of polymers has been successfully performed to obtain durable icephobic coatings, providing an interesting solution for applications facing icing problems, e.g. in marine, aviation, energy, and transportation industry. However, the fine tailoring of the process parameters represents a necessary strategy for optimising the coating production due to the unique thermal properties of each polymer. For this purpose, we vary the heat input of the process during flame spraying of the coating, by changing the transverse speed and the spraying distance. The results show that the variation in the process parameters strongly influenced the quality of the polymer coating, including its areal roughness, thickness, chemical composition, thermal stability, and degree of crystallinity. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these properties significantly affect the icephobic behaviour of the surface within the spray window of the chosen parameters. In conclusion, the relationship between the thermal degradation of the polymer and the icephobicity of the surface was defined. This highlights the importance of process parameter optimisation in order to achieve the desired icephobic performance of the LPDE coatings.

Ore conveyor belt rollers operate in harsh environments, making them prone to premature failure. Their service lives are highly dependent on the stress field and bearing misalignment angle, for which limit values are defined in a standard. In this work, an optimization methodology using metamodels based on radial basis functions is implemented to reduce the mass of two models of rollers. From a structural point of view, one of the rollers is made completely of metal, while the other also has some components made of polymeric material. The objective of this study is to develop and apply a parametric structural optimization methodology to minimize the mass of the two models of rollers. To represent the mechanical behavior of the rollers, simulations were performed using the finite element method. During the numerical optimization process, the variable parameters were the dimensions of the shaft and external tube. The geometric configuration that corresponded at the same time to the lowest mass and acceptable ranges for the stress and bearing misalignment angle was determined. With the proposed methodology, a 32.3% reduction in mass was obtained for a metal roller design and an 18.9% reduction for a polymer roller. In both cases, the constraints were not violated. For the all-metal roller, the safety factors for the maximum stress and bearing misalignment angle were 1.44 and 1.75, respectively, while for the polymer roller the corresponding figures were 1.50 and 2.23. This work describes a low-computational-cost optimization methodology for roller designs that have been little studied in the literature. Furthermore, the methodology could be adapted for use with other types of rollers and rollers made of different materials.

The paper presents the results of the ageing resistance of automotive mudfl aps made of recycled polyethylene blends. The mudfl aps were manufactured by a plastic sheet extrusion-calendaring process in Novotech Kostrzyn nad Odrą company. The changes of the mechanical properties in the tensile test and impact toughness test as well as in Shore hardness due to the accelerated aging process were characterized, taking into account the aging sensitivity coeffi cient (KI), and changes in the structure within the wavenumber range 4000-400 cm -1 , taking into account the CI coeffi cient. The results showed a higher melting point and crystallinity for the recycled HDPE blends during photo-oxidative degradation. Moreover, the results presented decreased tensile strength and ductility, due to macromolecular chain scission caused by oxidation. It was found that the blends of HDPE based on recycled materials are more sensitive to the aging process than virgin HDPE. Finally, it can be concluded that the sensitivity to ageing blends increases with the increase of recycled HDPE content in the HDPE matrix.
