Aging and sex hormones in males

Abstract: Several large cohort studies have disclosed the trajectories of sex steroids changes overtime in men and their clinical significance. In men the slow, physiological decline of serum testosterone (T) with advancing age overlaps with the clinical condition of overt, pathological hypogonadism. In addition, the increasing number of comorbidities, together with the high prevalence of chronic diseases, all further contribute to the decrease of serum T concentrations in the aging male. For all these reasons both the … Show more

“…Some patients with a poor general health status (malnourished, obese or chronic illnesses) may develop hypogonadism as a consequence of such conditions, and restoration to normal serum testosterone might be associated with increased risk of side effects, including major adverse cardiovascular events (Corona et al ., ; Decaroli & Rochira, ).…”

“…Serum TT and SHBG levels were measured by a chemiluminescent immunoassay (Beckman Coulter Inc., CA, USA) using a Beckman DXI 800 Analysis System (Fullerton, CA, USA). The levels of FT were calculated from TT, SHBG and albumin using a simple formula and a calculator widely available on the web (http://www.issam.ch/freetesto.htm) (Decaroli & Rochira, ). EMAS has recently defined diagnostic criteria for LOH to include the simultaneous presence of reproducibly low serum T (total T < 11 nmol/L and free T < 220 pmol/L) and three sexual symptoms (erectile dysfunction, and reduced frequency of sexual thoughts and morning erections) (Wu et al., ).…”

“…22 Post-menopausal women typically have serum estradiol levels below 15 pg/mL (60 pM). 21 Healthy men under age 55 average serum estradiol levels less than 40 pg/mL (150 pM), 21; 23; 24 and these levels decrease as men age and their testosterone levels decrease. 24 Average serum levels of estradiol achieved by ERT typically range from 20-100 pg/mL.…”
