Aging and drug discovery

Abstract: Multiple interventions in the aging process have been discovered to extend the healthspan of model organisms. Both industry and academia are therefore exploring possible transformative molecules that target aging and age-associated diseases. In this overview, we summarize the presented talks and discussion points of the 5th Annual Aging and Drug Discovery Forum 2018 in Basel, Switzerland. Here academia and industry came together, to discuss the latest progress and issues in aging research. The meeting covered … Show more

“…These data show that cells which express p16 become elevated with age, as expected from the body of published work [19,37,38,42], and suggest that the seven-day Alk5i+OT treatment reduces the numbers of p16 + cells in brain and in muscle of old mice. These data also demonstrate that p16 + myofibers are a normal part of physiological regeneration of injured muscle in both young and old.…”

“…One mechanism which might be involved in the rejuvenative effects of Alk5i+OT, is the reduction of numbers of p16 + cells in old tissues. High p16 generally corresponds with senescent cell phenotypes, and there is a profound interest in development of new pharmaceuticals for p16 high cell ablation (senolytics) or p16 down-modulation (senomorphics) as a way to increase life-span and/or health-span [16,38,42,5659].…”

“…The deep aging clock research is expected to increase in popularity. Recent workshops at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) [53] and at the leading industry conferences [15] highlighted the need for development of the comprehensive deep age predictors. The authors expect this trend to continue with the inevitable commercialization in the insurance and consumer wellness industries.…”

“…Many efforts are underway to apply deep learning techniques to predict the outcomes of clinical trials [13, 14]. However slowly, the artificial intelligence technologies started propagating into aging and longevity research and are rapidly increasing in popularity resulting in the formation of dedicated conference sessions and entire conferences [15] and focused reviews [16].…”
