“…Hobnail subtype, which was originally described as “thyroid papillary carcinoma with micropapillary and hobnail growth pattern” by our group in 2009, has similarity with histological features of micropapillary serous ovarian carcinoma 7 . The survival rates at 10 years with columnar cell and hobnail subtypes (89% and 64.1%) were worse than that of classic PTC (97%) 4 . The PTC with aggressive FFS pattern was shown to have frequent mitotic figures, necrosis, lymphovascular invasion, extrathyroidal invasion and metastases with high clinical stage.…”

“…The clustered follicular or solid patterns can be found in classic PTC and its subtypes, but predominant growth of FFS pattern with frequent mitotic figures and necrosis are not found in those PTCs. Among the subtypes of thyroid carcinomas, cribriform morular thyroid carcinoma, infiltrative follicular subtype and solid/trabecular subtype of PTC have been listed as differential diagnoses 3,4 . Cribriform morular thyroid carcinoma, which was formerly cribriform‐morular variant of PTC, shows cribriform growth pattern with morular formations.…”
