Aggressive periodontitis in southwestern American Indian adolescents

Thomas E. Rams,
Adolfo Contreras,
Jørgen Slots

Abstract: BackgroundThis study determined the prevalence of aggressive (molar‐incisor pattern) (Ag/MI) periodontitis and assessed the associated subgingival bacterial‐herpesvirus microbiota in Pueblo Indian adolescents in the southwestern United States.MethodsThe study included 240 Pueblo Indian adolescents, aged 13–20 years old, residing in three Rio Grande River villages in New Mexico and the Hopi Pueblo reservation in Arizona. Adolescents with Ag/MI periodontitis or periodontal health provided subgingival samples for… Show more

“…Enriched Brucella blood agar comprised the nonselective culture medium, Hammond's selective medium was used for Campylobacter isolation (Rams et al, 1993b ), and TSBV agar for Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Slots, 1982 ). Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Campylobacter species, Fusobacterium nucleatum , Parvimonas micra, Prevotella intermedia/nigrescens , and A. actinomycetemcomitans were routinely identified using established methods (Rams & Slots, 2023 ; Rams et al, 1996 , 2016 , 2018b , 2023 ), and the percentage of each study species was calculated. Phase‐contrast microscopy enumerated the proportional distribution of spirochetes and motile rods among total subgingival morphotypes (Slots et al, 1979 ).…”

“…Cytomegalovirus was detected in classic localized juvenile periodontitis but not in healthy periodontal sites, and cytomegalovirus was associated with juvenile periodontitis with an odds ratio of 3.5. 18 The two main periodontopathic bacteria A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis occurred, respectively, in 37.5% and 50.0% of localized juvenile periodontitis patients but not in healthy periodontal sites. 18 Periodontal cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus type-1 along with A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis were identified in the only Hopi adolescent who exhibited generalized juvenile periodontitis.…”

Dual infections by periodontal cytomegalovirus-Epstein-Barr virus and by A. actinomycetemcomitans-P. gingivalis were also identified in an 11-year-old girl with Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome and severe periodontal breakdown on 10 of 22 erupted teeth.…”
