Aggressive angiomyxoma of the vagina

Abstract: Aggressive angiomyxoma is a recently described pathological condition which affects mainly the soft tissues of the pelvis and perineum in women. It is neither encapsulated nor circumscribed and has a tendency for local recurrence. We report a 50-year-old woman who presented with a mass arising within the vaginal wall and extending to the perineum which appeared cystic on ultrasound. The mass was excised and there is no evidence of recurrence 40 months after surgery.

“…Since its original description in 1983 by Steeper and Rosai [1], aggressive angiomyxoma has gained recogni tion, with about 40 reported cases, as a distinctive myxoid neoplasm of the female pelvis and perineum [1,5,6] as well as the vagina [1,5,7], vulva [1,5,8] and cervix [9]. • However, reports of aggressive angiomyxoma in males are rare, to our knowledge, 12 cases in males having been reported in the English-language literature [2][3][4][5], The ori gin sites of aggressive angiomyxoma in males were scro tum [2][3][4], spermatic cord [2,3], inguinal region [2], peri anal region [5], perineum [5], and pelvis [2], Lack of awareness of this uncommon tumor in males is evidenced by failure of textbooks on urologic pathology to mention this entity.…”

“…On a CT scan, the tumor shows a well-defined margin and iso-or hypo-attenuation compared to the muscles. The swirling appearance is an important diagnostic feature as this is found in about 83% of the patients 3,4,10,11,[23][24][25][26] .…”
