Aggressive and fatal statin-induced dermatomyositis: a case report

Abstract: Statins are widely used and are currently the state-of-the-art treatment for primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Although statins are generally well tolerated and present an excellent safety profile, adverse effects from muscle toxicity may occur in some patients. Statin-induced dermatomyositis (DM) is a rare adverse event associated with its use and very few fatal cases have been reported. We present the case of a 69-year-old man with early onset DM precipitated by a small dose of simv… Show more

“…One case was reported to result in death from complications of pulmonary fibrosis . The second involved death from complications of dysphagia, leading to aspiration pneumonia and sepsis and eventual death during hospitalization after 2 months of being diagnosed with statin‐induced DM . Otherwise, the majority of cases demonstrated a self‐limiting course with eventual resolution.…”

“…DM has been known to be an iatrogenic, autoimmune, and a paraneoplastic syndrome. Several previous cases of statininduced DM have been reported in the literature with courses ranging from relatively benign to fatal [1]. We present the case of a patient with atorvastatin-induced DM.…”

“…Statins are generally well tolerated and safe, making them an excellent choice in therapy. However, there are common instances of statin-induced myalgias and rare instances of moderate-to-severe cases of statin-induced myopathies [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Statin-induced myopathy consists of a spectrum of disease conditions including polymyositis (PM), dermatomyositis (DM), and immune-mediated necrotizing myositis (IMNM).…”
