AGET ATRP of Acrylamide in Aqueous Media

Abstract: Abstract:The recently developed initiation system, the activator generated by electron transfer (AGET) was used in atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) to synthesize well-controlled polyacrylamide in aqueous media at 25 ºC. The different reducing agents involved ascorbic acid and glucosa; well-controlled polymers were obtained when ascorbic acid was used as water-soluble reducing agent. The polymerizations targeted at degrees of polymerization in the range of 400 resulted in polymers with low polydisper… Show more

“…Catalytic (transition metal) is the most important factor for the success of ATRP, which can form transition metal ligands with ligands to regulate the redox reaction between two oxidation states of transition metal complexes. Compared with other catalysts, the ferric ion is not only biocompatible but also suitable for a wide range of monomers . Therefore, FeCl 3 was chosen as the catalyst for the ARGET ATRP initiating system in this work.…”

“…Herein, the concentration of active free radicals is always kept at a low level to regulate the rate of polymerization and produce well‐defined polymers with controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution. Tan reported a 2‐Cl‐PA/CuCl 2 /Me 6 TREN/Vc initiator/catalyst system, where the controlled polymerization reaction of AM in aqueous media was realized. Results showed that the polymers had a narrow polydispersity level and the first‐order kinetic plots were linear lines.…”

“…ATRP of acrylamide has also been claimed in aqueous media; however, the molecular weight again did not match the theoretical one. Terminated polyacrylamide (loss of the halogen group) has been reported following the ATRP of AM using 2-Cl-PA/CuCl/Me 6 TREN as the initiator/catalyst system in a DMF–water (50–70 vol % DMF) solution .…”

“…4,11,23 Low dispersity PAM could be prepared using an activator generated by electron transfer ATRP in water at room temperature. 24 However, the apparent molecular weights were relatively low (<6000 g/mol).…”
