Systems-of-Systems (SoS) are complex systems composed of managerially and operationally independent constituent systems (CS). Smart cities are examples of SoS. These types of systems impose challenges to the traditional software architecture design, such as describing heterogeneous CS that are constantly evolving and identifying emergent behaviors from the interactions of those CS. Executable models (ExM) have been envisioned as a possible solution to deal with the challenges raised by SoS architectural design. However, to the best of our knowledge, no systematic mapping study (SMS) exists that investigate current state of art in the research area of SoS architectual design using ExM. Therefore, the main goal of this study is to synthesize evidence of that research area, observing research trends and identifying possible research gaps yet to be explored. Results reveal that (i) the use of model transformation from a static SoS domain-specific language to a ExM is intensely explored and (ii) ExM were used mainly to evaluate and synthesize SoS architectures but also to observe emergent behaviors and to measure quality attributes.

The sooner disruptive emergent behaviors are detected, the sooner preventive measures can be taken to ensure the resilience of business processes execution. Therefore, organizations need to prepare for emergent behaviors by embedding corrective control mechanisms, which help coordinate organization-wide behavior (and goals) with the behavior of local autonomous entities. Ongoing technological advances, brought by the Industry 4.0 and cyber-physical systems of systems paradigms, can support integration within complex enterprises, such as supply chains. In this paper, we propose a reference enterprise architecture for the detection and monitoring of emergent behaviors in enterprises. We focus on addressing the need for an adequate reaction to disruptions. Based on a systematic review of the literature on the topic of current architectural designs for understanding emergent behaviors, we distill architectural requirements. Our architecture is a hybrid as it combines distributed autonomous business logic (expressed in terms of simple business rules) and some central control mechanisms. We exemplify the instantiation and use of this architecture by means of a proof-of-concept implementation, using a multimodal logistics case study. The obtained results provide a basis for achieving supply chain resilience “by design”, i.e., through the design of coordination mechanisms that are well equipped to absorb and compensate for the effects of emergent disruptive behaviors.

In this paper, we introduce the system operational dependency analysis methodology. Its purpose is to assess the effect of dependencies between components in a monolithic complex system, or between systems in a system-of-systems, and to support design decision making. We propose a parametric model of the behavior of the system. This approach results in a simple, intuitive model, whose parameters give a direct insight into the causes of observed, and possibly emergent, behavior. Using the proposed method, designers, and decision makers can quickly analyze and explore the behavior of complex systems and evaluate different architecture under various working conditions. Thus, the system operational dependency analysis method supports educated decision making both in the design and in the update process of systems architecture, without the need to execute extensive simulations. In particular, in the phase of concept generation and selection, the information given by the method can be used to identify promising architectures to be further tested and improved, while discarding architectures that do not show the required level of global features. Application of the proposed method to a small example is used to demonstrate both the validation of the parametric model, and the capabilities of the method for system analysis, design and architecture.
