Background: Many physical and psychosocial changes occur in elderly people due to aging. These changes affect the adaptation, coping style, and quality of life of elderly people. This study was conducted to determine the adaptation difficulty to the process of aging and religious coping styles used by elderly people. Methods: The research was conducted as a cross-sectional type. The sample consisted of 505 elderly people from seven family health centres of a city in Turkey. Data were collected via a personal information form, the Assessment Scale of Adaptation Difficulty for the Elderly, and the Religious Coping Scale. Results: The adaptation difficulty for the elderly total mean score was 0.52 (SD = 0.56). The positive religious coping mean score was 23.49 (SD = 5.30), and the negative religious coping mean score was 7.88 (SD = 3.20). While there was a negative weak relationship between the adaptation difficulty for the elderly and the positive religious coping (r = −0.147, P = 0.001), there was no significant relation between the adaptation difficulty for the elderly and the negative religious coping (r = −0.028, P > 0.05). Conclusions: The results revealed that adaptation difficulty to the process of aging is low, elderly people use positive coping strategies, and adaptation to old age increased as positive coping strategies were used. Factors that affect religious coping must be considered to improve the health of elderly people.

Ageing is an enigmatic and progressive biological process which undermines the normal functions of living organisms with time. Ageing has been conspicuously linked to dietary habits, whereby dietary restrictions and antioxidants play a substantial role in slowing the ageing process. Oxygen is an essential molecule that sustains human life on earth and is involved in the synthesis of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that pose certain health complications. The ROS are believed to be a significant factor in the progression of ageing. A robust lifestyle and healthy food, containing dietary antioxidants, are essential for improving the overall livelihood and decelerating the ageing process. Dietary antioxidants such as adaptogens, anthocyanins, vitamins A/D/C/E and isoflavones slow the ageing phenomena by reducing ROS production in the cells, thereby improving the life span of living organisms. This review highlights the manifestations of ageing, theories associated with ageing and the importance of diet management in ageing. It also discusses the available functional foods as well as nutraceuticals with anti-ageing potential.

This study aims to describe the needs of nursing for NCDs as described by patients with NCDs, healthcare providers (HP) and hospital accreditation (HA) surveyors in primary care settings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted in five Thai Health Promoting Hospitals (THPH). Participants included 385 patients with NCDs, 21 HP, and 10 HA surveyors. Data were collected using questionnaires and medical records were then analyzed using descriptive statistics. RESULTS: Mean age of patients, HP, and HA surveyors were 63.9 ± 10.7, 39.3 ± 12.5, and 49.9 ± 12.2 years, respectively. Most of the patients were female (72.2%) and had at least 2 diseases (73.4%). More than half of the patients were overweight or obese, had excessive waist circumference and an average systolic blood pressure higher than normal. The highest need of nursing as described by patients was emergency care, similarly to all HP's needs, while the highest need of nursing as described by HA surveyors was human resources. The patients' need of emergency care includes contact with HP, knowledge of emergency complications, basic emergency response skills, and follow up health status, while the HP's needs include referral system in emergency care, basic emergency response skills, and knowledge and skill of emergency management. In addition, the human resources include knowledge and skills for NCDs in primary care and in the community, and an assessment of medical equipment. CONCLUSION: Results suggested that HP, including nurses, should increase knowledge and skills in emergency care for patients with NCDs in primary care settings.
