Age‐related sensitization profiles for hazelnut (Corylus avellana) in a birch‐endemic region

Abstract: Hazelnut allergy in a birch-endemic region exhibits age-related sensitization profiles with distinct clinical outcomes that can be identified using CRD. The majority of hazelnut allergic preschool and school children in a birch-endemic region show systemic reactions on consumption of processed hazelnut, mostly being sensitized to the hazelnut legumin-like allergen Cor a 9 but unrelated to birch pollen allergy. In contrast, adults generally suffer from an OAS apparently as a result of cross-reactivity between C… Show more

“…Second, 75 patients with a definite history of immediate allergic symptoms due to consumption of raw or processed hazelnuts were included. These were stratified into 6 groups according to the extent of the clinical reaction (OAS or generalized reaction) and age (0-6, 7-18 and >18 years) as detailed elsewhere [4,8,9]. Finally, 15 age-matched hazelnut-tolerant individuals with a positive sIgE to hazelnut and 15 nonallergic and nonsensitized age-matched individuals served as a control group.…”

“…Hazelnut allergy has been shown to exhibit distinct geographic and age-related phenotypes, depending on incompletely disentangled sensitization profiles of the individual patient [3,4,5,6,7]. …”

“…Taking into consideration that the difference in sensitization patterns may vary according to geographical and socio-cultural conditions, (10)(11)(12) it is appropriate to put into perspective some geographical aspects of the study area before discussing the results of the study. The Aburrá Valley area is a basin located between two mountain ranges at an altitude of 1,479 meters above sea level.…”
