Age-related Macular Degeneration Is Associated with Atherosclerosis

Abstract: Age-related macular degeneration is the most frequent cause of blindness in the elderly. A vascular basis of the disease has been suggested, but not confirmed. The association between atherosclerosis and this type of macular degeneration was investigated in 104 subjects with and 1,324 subjects without macular degeneration as part of the population-based Rotterdam Study. The study was performed between March 1990 and July 1993 in a suburb of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Macular degeneration was assessed on fundu… Show more

“…The prevalence of both AMD and cardiovascular disease are strongly age-dependent, but there are conflicting reports about the independent associations of cardiovascular disease, its risk factors and AMD. Factors such as hypertension, (4-10) previous vascular events, (9,(11)(12)(13)(14)(15) obesity, (4,11,(16)(17)(18)(19) and diabetes (11,20,21) have been significantly associated with early and advanced AMD in several studies. Hypertension and atherosclerosis have been hypothesized by Friedman (22) to increase the risk of AMD through the reduction of blood flow through the choroidal vasculature and lipid deposition in Bruch's membrane with a reduction of permeability leading to the upregulation of vascular endothelial derived growth factor.…”

“…(26) Most data on the association between various cardiovascular risk factors and AMD have been derived from studies among non-Hispanic Whites. (4)(5)(6)(7)(8)11,13,(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21) To date, there have been few published risk factor analyses of AMD and cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular risk factors among Latinos. (9,10,12,14) The Latino population is the largest minority group in the United States (US) and the fastest growing segment of the US population.…”

“…Successful transfer of lipids to nascent apo B regulates whether apo B is secreted in a mature lipoprotein particle or degraded via the ubiquitin-proteasome system. 28 -30 Patients with CVD history or symptoms have increased risk for ARM 31,32 (G. McGwin, C. Owsley, C.A. Curcio, R.J. Crain, submitted), and CVD and ARM have common risk factors (age, smoking, and hypertension).…”
