Age-related changes of bone strength phenotypes: observational follow-up study of hand bone mineral density

Abstract: Summary In a cross-sectional and follow-up study, we evaluated age-related changes of hand bone mineral density in both sexes using data obtained by digital radiographic densitometry in a large Chuvashian cohort. Objectives The aim of the study was to evaluate age-related changes of hand bone mineral density (BMD) in both sexes using data obtained by digital radiographic densitometry in a large Chuvashian cohort. Methods The data were gathered in 1994 (557 individuals) and 2002 (513 individuals). The latter sa… Show more

“…The association analysis was conducted on age‐adjusted variables. For each trait, the best‐fitting polynomial model of age dependence was found as described elsewhere . Heritability estimates for each trait were obtained using variance component analysis as repeatedly described by us previously and implemented in the statistical package MAN .…”

“…A rural population is more homogeneous than an urban population in terms of ethnicity, occupation, and physical activity. The studied sample was described in detail elsewhere (Kalichman et al, 2006; Malkin et al, 2006). Briefly, data were gathered twice: in 1994 and 2002.…”

“…Similar to all the other human body systems, the adult human skeleton undergoes significant changes with age. These changes concern not only widely discussed bone mineral content and density (Ensrud et al, 1995; Miller, 2005; Malkin et al, 2006; Toledo and Jergas, 2006) but also other characteristics of bone associated with bone strength and fragility. This includes the length of long bones, their cross‐sectional area, as well as the thickness of the bones' cortical wall.…”
