Age, Origin and Significance of the Raised Gravel Barrier at Church Bay, Rathlin Island, County Antrim

Abstract: The raised beach in Church Bay on Rathlin Island, Co. Antrim is shown to be a solitary gravel barrier thai formed around 12(MX) to 13000 years ago as a result of erosion of the chalk outcrops to the south. The beach sediments exposed in a back barrier gravel pit show the progressive development of a coastal structure under occasional washover. The barrier suggests a sea-level several metres above present, which is consistent with late-Midlandian evidence from elsewhere on the Irish coast, but suggests major la… Show more

“…2014). The Irish Ice Sheet also became separate at this time; the most pertinent site for limiting this is the radiocarbon ages on Rathlin Island (Carter 1993). Given the lackof dating from central Ireland, a large ice cap is still possible, with the margin constrained only by ages in County Clare (T5BH), the Ox Mountains (Clark et al 2009), Donegal (Ballantyne et al 2007) and radiocarbon ages from Lough Nadourcan (Watson et al 2010).…”

“…Red line is derived from the new ice model of Bradley et al (2011), based on the optimum earth model inferred in Bradley et al (2009). 1) Raised beach notches bordering the Mourne Plain near Annalong (McCabe, 1986); 2) Low-stand recorded by supposed subaerial channels (troughs) between Derryoge and Kilkeel ; 3) Dated glaciomarine muds at Kilkeel Steps 4) Dated marine muds at Cooley Point and Port (McCabe and Haynes, 1996;McCabe et al, 2007b); 5) Readvance to Clogher Head (McCabe et al, 2007b);6) Dated marine mud at Cranfield Point and reported intertidal boulder pavement at Cooley Point ; 7) Readvance to Killard Point limits; 8) Drapes of dated red marine mud on subglacial bedforms and formation of late-glacial raised shoreline on Rough Island, Strandford Lough (McCabe et al, 2005); 9) Creation of gravel barrier on Rathin Island (Carter, 1993); 10) Submerged beach and intertidal sands, Belfast Lough .
