A geochronological and geochemical study on 10 samples of seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) from the inactive Peterburgskoye hydrothermal field at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) was carried out. The 230 Th/U ages of the SMS are the oldest for the Quaternary hydrothermal ores ever found at the ocean floor. According to them the hydrothermal activity at Peterburgskoye field started at least 170 ka and continued down to 63 ka. The oldest hydrothermal ores from this field consist mainly of pyrite and chalcopyrite and have geochemical properties typical for SMS associated with basalts.

Duanqiao hydrothermal field is located between the Indomed and Gallieni fracture zones at the central volcano, at 50°28 0 E in the ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR). Twenty-eight subsamples from a relict chimney and massive sulfides were dated using the 230 Th/ 238 U method. Four main episodes of hydrothermal activity were determined according to the restricted results: 68. 9-84.3, 43.9-48.4, 25.3-34.8, and 0.7-17.3 kyrs. Hydrothermal activity of Duanqiao probably started about 84.3 (±0.5) kyrs ago and ceased about 0.737 (±0.023) kyrs ago. The periodic character of hydrothermal activity may be related to the heat source provided by the interaction of local magmatism and tectonism. The estimated mean growth rate of the sulfide chimney is \0.02 mm/yr. This study is the first to estimate the growth rate of chimneys in the SWIR. The maximum age of the relict chimney in Duanqiao hydrothermal filed is close to that of the chimneys from Mt. Jourdanne (70 kyrs). The hydrothermal activity in Dragon Flag field is much more recent than that of Duanqiao or Mt. Jourdanne fields. The massive sulfides are younger than the sulfides from other hydrothermal fields such as Rainbow, Sonne and Ashadze-2. The preliminarily estimated reserves of sulfide ores of Duanqiao are approximately 0.5-2.9 million tons.

[1] Bottom pressure measurements acquired from the TAG hydrothermal field on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (26°N) contain clusters of narrowband spectral peaks centered at periods from 22 to 53.2 minutes. The strongest signal at 53.2 min corresponds to 13 mm of water depth variation. Smaller, but statistically significant, signals were also observed at periods of 22, 26.5, 33.4, and 37.7 min (1 -4 mm amplitude). These kinds of signals have not previously been observed in the ocean, and they appear to represent vertical motion of the seafloor in response to hydrothermal flow -similar in many ways to periodic terrestrial geysers. We demonstrate that displacements of 13 mm can be produced by relatively small flow-induced pressures (several kPa) if the source region is less than $100 m below the seafloor. We suggest that the periodic nature of the signals results from a nonlinear relationship between fluid pore pressure and crustal permeability.
