Childhood adversity has been shown to increase the risk of psychotic symptoms in adult life.However, there are no previous studies looking at the association between experiencing a natural disaster during childhood and the development of psychotic symptoms in young adulthood.Eight hundred and six bushfire-exposed children and 725 control children were evaluated following the 1983 South Australian bushfires. Five hundred and twenty nine (65.6%) of the bushfire group and 464 (64%) controls participated in a follow up study 20 years later.Childhood data on emotional and behavioural disorders and dysfunctional parenting was available. The adult assessment included the Australian National Health and Well-Being psychosis screen and detailed information about trauma, childhood adversity and alcohol and cannabis abuse.5.6% of subjects responded positively to the psychosis screen and 2.6% responded positively to a further probe question. Psychotic symptoms were more common in subjects exposed to a greater number of traumas, and were associated with higher rates of childhood adversity, emotional and behavioural disturbance, dysfunctional parenting, and alcohol and cannabis abuse. Subjects exposed to bushfires as children did not have a greater risk of psychosis. Our results indicate that exposure to multiple traumas, rather than a single major trauma, increases the risk of later psychosis.

Nevertheless, the relationship between cannabis use and the onset of early (or, in retrospect, prodromal) symptoms of psychosis remains unclear. The study focused on investigating the relationship between cannabis use and early and high-risk symptoms in subjects at clinical high risk for psychosis. Method: Prospective multicenter, naturalistic field study with an 18-month follow-up period in 245 help-seeking individuals clinically at high risk. The Composite International Diagnostic Interview was used to assess their cannabis use. Age at onset of high risk or certain early symptoms was assessed retrospectively with the Interview for the Retrospective Assessment of the Onset of Schizophrenia. Results: Younger age at onset of cannabis use or a cannabis use disorder was significantly related to younger age at onset of six symptoms (0.33 < r s < 0.83, 0.004 < P < 0.001). Onset of cannabis use preceded symptoms in most participants.

ABS TRACT:The changes of the cognitive and psychomotor functions in the chronic cannabis users after a month of remission Objective: In our study, it is aimed to investigate impacts of cannabis use on information processing and psychomotor functions and to examine changes in the cognitive functions at the end of abstinence over a month. Method:The study was initiated with 34 volunteer participants using cannabis at least over two years, directed by a forensic unit. 34 persons were assessed at admission and were planned to assess after a month of remission. As 14 participants discontinued the study 20 participants only were assessed again at the end Results: There was no statistically significant difference between participants continue to the treatment and those discontinue in terms of sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. The participants discontinue were using more daily cannabis dose. The auditory reaction time of the group continue to the treatment decreased statistically significantly after a month whereas there was no statistically significant difference in the visual reaction time. The scores of the AMIPB-A and AMIPB-B were detected statistically higher after a month compared to admission. The score of the dominant hand FTT after a month was detected statistically higher than that in admission whereas there was no statistically significant difference in the non-dominant hand score. Conclusion:Improvements in scores of AMIP-A, AMIP-B, FTT and auditory reaction time after one month of quitting cannabis suggest that cannabis use may impair cognitive functions such as information processing, reaction time and motor functions. We suggest that future studies to assess cognitive functions after either a shorter (i.e. 1 week) or a longer (i.e. 2 months) period of cannabis abstinence in larger samples may provide further useful data about the relationship between cannabis use and cognitive functions.
