Age of menarche is associated with knee joint replacement due to primary osteoarthritis (The HUNT Study and the Norwegian Arthroplasty Register)

Abstract: We found that increasing age at menarche reduced the risk of TKR. Past users and users of systemic HRT were at higher risk of TKR compared to never users. Parity did not increase the risk of THR or TKR.

“…However, larger population-based studies following similar designs and conducted in different geographical areas within Norway should be carried out to explore how the trend of pubertal timing develops in Norway. (58,65,66,78,(187)(188)(189)(190)(191)(192)(193)(194). Open markers are retrospective surveys in adult women.…”

“…A number of studies have examined the association of reproductive and hormonal factors with knee OA, but the results are inconclusive. Increasing parity has been reported as a risk factor for radiographic knee OA and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for OA , while other studies have found no association of parity with radiographic knee OA or TKA due to OA . A large prospective cohort study found increased risk of TKA associated with low age at menarche , but this finding was contradicted by another large‐scale cohort study showing no association .…”
