Multi-isotope study including whole-rock NdSr, single zircon Hf, and SIMS d 18 O analyses of zircons sheds light on magma sources in the northernmost Arabian-Nubian Shield (ANS) during *820-570 Ma. Reconnaissance initial Nd and Sr isotope data for the older rocks (*820-740 Ma) reaffirms previous estimates that early crustal evolution in this part of the shield involved some crustal contamination by pre-ANS material. Prominent isotope provinciality is displayed by post-collisional calc-alkaline and alkaline igneous rocks of *635-570 Ma across a NW-SE transect across basement of the Sinai Peninsula (Egypt) and southern Israel. Silicic rocks of the NW-region are characterized by lower eNd(T)-eHf(T) and higher Sr i and d 18 O compared with rocks of the SE-region, and the transition between the regions is gradual. Within each region isotope ratios are independent of the extent of magma fractionation, and zircon cores and rims yield similar d 18 O values. Comparison with southern segments of the ANS shows that the source for most *635-570 Ma rocks can be modeled as the isotopically aged lowerintermediate crust in the ANS core (SE-region) and its northern, more contaminated ANS margins (NW-region). Nevertheless, Nd-Sr isotope enrichment of the lithospheric mantle is indicated by some basic magmas of the NWregion displaying the most enriched Nd-Sr isotope compositions. Comparison of Nd and Hf depleted mantle model ages for rocks of the SE-region may indicate that crustal formation events in the ANS geographical core took place at 1.1-1.2 Ga and were followed by crustal differentiation starting at *0.9 Ga.

S U M M A R YWe constrain and model the geometry of the Zagros foreland to assess the equivalent elastic thickness of the northern edge of the Arabian plate and the loads that have originated due to the Arabia-Eurasia collision. The Oligo-Miocene Asmari formation, and its equivalents in Iraq and Syria, is used to estimate the post-collisional subsidence as they separate passive margin sediments from the younger foreland deposits. The depth to these formations is obtained by synthesizing a large database of well logs, seismic profiles and structural sections from the Mesopotamian basin and the Persian Gulf. The foreland depth varies along strike of the Zagros wedge between 1 and 6 km. The foreland is deepest beneath the Dezful embayment, in southwest Iran, and becomes shallower towards both ends. We investigate how the geometry of the foreland relates to the range topography loading based on simple flexural models. Deflection of the Arabian plate is modelled using point load distribution and convolution technique. The results show that the foreland depth is well predicted with a flexural model which assumes loading by the basin sedimentary fill, and thickened crust of the Zagros. The model also predicts a Moho depth consistent with Free-Air anomalies over the foreland and Zagros wedge. The equivalent elastic thickness of the flexed Arabian lithosphere is estimated to be ca. 50 km. We conclude that other sources of loading of the lithosphere, either related to the density variations (e.g. due to a possible lithospheric root) or dynamic origin (e.g. due to sublithospheric mantle flow or lithospheric buckling) have a negligible influence on the foreland geometry, Moho depth and topography of the Zagros. We calculate the shortening across the Zagros assuming conservation of crustal mass during deformation, trapping of all the sediments eroded from the range in the foreland, and an initial crustal thickness of 38 km. This calculation implies a minimum of 126 ± 18 km of crustal shortening due to ophiolite obduction and post-collisional shortening.

The current study documents for the first time the existence of four suites of dykes intruded the Neoproterozoic crustal rocks in southwestern Jordan. The oldest suite strike E-W followed by suites strike NE-SW, N-S and NW-SE which is the youngest one. Remote sensing and GIS techniques were used for mapping the dykes observed at the satellite image of the study area. Landsat Thematic Mapper color composite scenes allowed mapping of most the dyke swarms in the study area. Digital image processing technique was performed to map the dyke swarms in the study area. The emplacement of the dykes is consistent with extensional continental tectonic setting during the Precambrian time and before the deposition of the Cambrian sediments. The study gives an evidence for an anticlockwise rotation of the extensional stress regimes that caused these suites of dykes. Remote sensing and GIS technique used here could thus guide the interpretation and provide exact and accurate dyke mapping tools.
