Age interacts with the expression of steroid and HER-2 receptors in operable invasive breast cancer

Abstract: There is a qualitative interaction between age and expression of steroid and HER-2 receptors. Our findings suggest a strong age-related selective growth advantage for breast tumour cells belonging to the ER+PR+HER-2+ subgroup.

“…Our observed associations with age are in accordance with the findings in the literature for Caucasian women [39]. At a higher age, tumors are more often ER positive [39,40,41,42]. In the study by Parise et al [39], the increase in the percentage of the ER + /PR + /HER2 - subtype with increasing age almost mirrored the increasing proportion of BC cases in white women [39].…”

“…Results reported in this study were based only on an IHC score of >0. Positivity for psoriasin/S100A7 (a marker that correlates with indicators of poor prognosis) and CK5/6 (one of the markers of basal phenotype) was set at >0, for Ki67 at >30 (corresponding to the median of the ER− TMA), whereas for EGFR and HER‐2, only breast cancers that showed strong, intense membranous immunopositivity of IHC 3+ (>30% of invasive tumour cells) were considered positive, as reported, used and recommended by other groups 32–34 …”

“…Histology and multifocal disease were analyzed as dichotomous variables, the combined receptor status as six-level categorical. Determination of tumor grading and ER, PR, and HER-2/neu status was done according to established procedures, which have been described in more detail elsewhere [8]. A breast cancer was allocated to the lobular subtype if more than 90% of the tumor mass harboured morphological features of the lobular type; this was always confirmed by lack of E-cadherin expression.…”
