Age, Growth, Maturity, and Fecundity of Humper Lake Trout, Isle Royale, Lake Superior

Abstract: Humper lake trout are one of the several races or subpopulations of lake trout in Lake Superior. This study is based on 3,705 fish collected on a reef south of Isle Royale near the eastern end. The mean lengths of humper trout from commercial gill nets were smaller than those of lean lake trout. Members of age‐groups VII, VIII, and IX represented 81.5 per cent of the commercial humper catch. The body‐scale relation was described by two intersecting straight lines. The weight of humper trout increased as the 3.… Show more

“…Although considered a deep-water-type of lake charr, it is in comparison to the siscowet a leaner fish intermediate in fat content between leans and siscowets (Eschmeyer and Phillips 1965). Its small body size and high longevity (Rahrer 1965) suggest a restricted food supply. It is recognizable by its long Fig.…”

“…The occurrence of sympatric morphotypes of lake trout therefore extends beyond the Laurentian Great Lakes. A few studies have compared life history (in terms of patterns in age, growth, and maturity) among lake trout morphotypes from the Great Lakes (e.g., Rahrer 1965;Burnham-Curtis and Bronte 1996). However, life history characteristics have not been compared between the newly described sympatric lake trout morphotypes that occur elsewhere in North America.…”

“…Lake trout were classified as either humper or lean based on the characteristics described by Zimmerman et al (2007). We expected to find that humpers and leans in the lightly exploited Lake Mistassini would be older in age (due to low mortality), slower growing, and later maturing than exploited populations (Johnson 1972(Johnson , 1976 but would differ in life history characteristics (age, growth, survival, and maturity) because of the different habitat use (food and temperature) in Lake Mistassini than in the Laurentian Great Lakes (Rahrer 1965;Burnham-Curtis and Bronte 1996).…”
