Age estimates for an adaptive lake fish radiation, its mitochondrial introgression, and an unexpected sister group: Sailfin silversides of the Malili Lakes system in Sulawesi

Abstract: BackgroundThe Malili Lakes system in central Sulawesi (Indonesia) is a hotspot of freshwater biodiversity in the Wallacea, characterized by endemic species flocks like the sailfin silversides (Teleostei: Atherinomorpha: Telmatherinidae) radiation. Phylogenetic reconstructions of these freshwater fishes have previously revealed two Lake Matano Telmatherina lineages (sharpfins and roundfins) forming an ancient monophyletic group, which is however masked by introgressive hybridization of sharpfins with riverine p… Show more

“…Stelbrink et al [28] applied different molecular clock approaches, and argued that the initial divergence of Telmatherina within Lake Matano, leading to the formation of sharpfins and roundfins, dates back approx. 1.9 Myr.…”

“…Sequences from the following taxa were used as out‐groups: Atherinomorus lacunosus (GenBank #KJ667868; Stelbrink, Stöger, Hadiaty, Schliewen, & Herder, 2014) and Hypoatherina tsurugae (GenBank #AP004420.1; Miya et al., 2003). The curated sequences were deposited in GenBank under accession numbers MF924405–MF924566.…”

“…In this study, 3 mitochondrial DNA fragments, including 12S rRNA, 16S rRNA partial sequences and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 (ND2) sequences, were targeted for amplification and sequencing. These genes fragments were frequently used for other vertebrate phylogeographies (Cowman & Bellwood 2011;Stelbrink et al 2014;Wiens et al 2013) as well as for the subfamily Painae (Wang et al , 2012(Wang et al , 2013Zhang et al 2010;Yang et al 2011).…”
