“…Detailed neuro-otological examinations, including pure-tone audiometry, were performed on 13 families at the Departments of Neurology and Otolaryngology, Tokyo Medical and Dental University. Progressive hearing impairment was assessed when the pure-tone average calculated from thresholds at the frequencies of 0.5, 1, and 2 kHz was more severe than the mean ϩ2 SD of age-matched normal Japanese population (Tsuiki et al 2002).
