Age-dependent humoral responses of children to mycobacterial antigens

Abstract: In the United States, disseminated infection with environmental mycobacteria, including the Mycobacterium avium complex, is the most common opportunistic bacterial infection seen in AIDS patients. However, the source and relative degree of exposure to environmental mycobacteria during childhood are unknown. To examine the age-related exposure to mycobacteria, we obtained serum samples from 150 children ranging in age from 6 months to 18 years. Each sample was tested against both M. avium (serovar 1) sonic extr… Show more

“…Costello et al reported that children from the United Kingdom and Southeast Asia with disseminated ATB disease had lower LAM-specific IgG serum-titers in comparison to individuals with localized ATB lesions ( 96 ). In agreement, the decrease in LAM IgG-titers from placentally transferred maternal IgGs until increased production of infant IgGs correlated with the peak incidence of disseminated ATB ( 96 98 ). Similarly, the absence of Abs binding to the mycobacterial 38 kDa Ag correlated with disseminated TB in children and TB-meningitis in adults ( 99 ).…”

“…There are reports that show cross-reactive antibodies generated by exposure to environmental mycobacteria or non-pathogenic enteric or pulmonary bacteria [ 56 , 57 ]. It has also been shown that the development of low level humoral immune responses to Mycobacterium avium sonic extracts and mycobacterial LAM in children correlates with increasing age, and by 18 years of age many individuals were sero-reactive to mycobacterial antigens [ 58 ].…”

“…24 Studies of antibody to Mycobacterium avium antigens in the non-BCG immunised persons in the United Kingdom and tuberculin skin test negative persons in the United States indicated that a high percentage of the population in northern regions has experienced asymptomatic infection with non-tuberculous mycobacteria. 25,26 This is not unexpected given the frequency of potable water colonisation described above.…”
