Age-dependent different action of curcumin in thyroid of rat.

Abstract: Abstract:The aging is associated with alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroidal axis which can lead to hypothyreosis. Our previous investigations has shown that polyphenol curcumin can enhance the manifestation of hypothyreosis in rats simultanous treated with propylthiouracil. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between age-related changes and curcumin action in the thyroid of old rats. To this end, morphometric and radioimmunological methods were used. The study was conducted o… Show more

“…This was substantiated by morphometric analysis of follicular diameter, height of follicular cells and area percent of colloid which revealed non significant differences as compared to control group. These findings were consistent with the assumption that curcumin activity depends on the functional condition of the gland [20] .…”

“…It was purchased from Sigma-Aldrich chemical company (Cairo, Egypt) in the form of a bottle containing 10 gm of yellow powder, (Catalogue number C1386). The required daily dose (for the 5 rats of the group) was weighted, suspended in 2 ml corn oil and given orally through gastric gavage at a dose of 100 mg/Kg/bw [20] .…”

“…While many studies have reported on the variety of beneficial effects of polyphenols there is also evidence to suggest that there are age-related differences in the effectiveness of these compounds in the treatment of model dysfunctions [69]. In addition, in vitro analyses by many investigators have shown that compounds like resveratrol have the capacity to significantly affect the cellular environment even at low concentrations while others suggest that polyphenols may possess cytotoxic effects under certain conditions [70].…”

“…Up to now no studies have reported the effects of Cuminum cyminum seeds on broiler blood thyroid hormones whether in thermoneutral or heat stress conditions. Also, limited numbers of animal studies on the effects of some feeding spice products and medicinal herbs acting as an antioxidant on thyroid hormones were reported and discrepant results were obtained [48,49] . The supplementation of broiler chicken's diet with Cuminum cyminum seeds at a level of 0.2% enhanced broiler feed efficacy during the summer and concomitantly, alleviated the negative effects of chronic heat stress on glycaemia, lipidaemia and calcaemia of broilers.…”
